Apple Valley, CA – August 28, 2009:
They may have been seen running through a local field, or as close as the neighbors’ backyard.
Native animals such as coyotes, bobcats, and even mountain lions live in the High Desert and frequently pass through neighborhoods. Wildlife can pose a threat to domestic animals and small pets, and the Town of Apple Valley Animal Services wants all Apple Valley residents to be informed and alert.
Native predators such as coyotes are agile and can quickly scale a fence to grab small pets. Bobcats are expert hunters and will take pet birds, even from cages on back porches, as well as small dogs and cats.
To deter native animals from coming in, remove food and water sources when pets are not in the yard. Do not let pools of water accumulate and regularly pick up fallen fruit from trees. In addition, small pets should be monitored when playing outside.
If a coyote is a nuisance in your neighborhood, call Animal Services. An animal control officer will ask questions to determine if the situation warrants further attention. Animal Services currently has coyote traps set in the area near Rincon and Yucca Loma Roads. Do not approach coyotes caught in a trap. Instead, call Animal Services so the animal can be safely removed.
Dog, cat and skunk traps are available free of charge to residents who experience problem animals at their residence. Traps can be signed out to residents Monday through Thursday at the Animal Shelter. When problem animals are captured, officers will remove the trapped animal from the property.
