The Apple Valley Animal Shelter will reopen on May 1, 2025. It had to close for a while because of a dog illness called canine distemper. Now, the shelter is healthy and ready to welcome visitors—and help pets find new homes.
There have been no new cases of illness since April 22. Sick dogs were kept separate, and all animals got extra care and vaccines. The shelter was cleaned and checked by a vet. It’s now safe to open again, after being closed since April 9.
“We’ve done everything to keep our animals healthy,” said Kristin Hall, the shelter’s Health Supervisor. “The dogs are ready for adoption and have been watched closely for two weeks.”
Dogs that are still recovering will stay in a special area. That part of the shelter will stay closed to keep everyone safe. New animals will also be kept separate and vaccinated when they arrive.
To celebrate reopening, the shelter is joining the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event for the first time. From May 1–15, adoption fees will be lower:
- $50 for dogs
- $20 for cats
- (Spay/neuter deposit may still apply)
Adoptions will happen at:

“This event helps save lives,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Thousands of pets will find loving homes during these two weeks.”
Apple Valley is proud to be part of this nationwide effort. The Town invites everyone to help give these animals a second chance.
Together, we can build a better life—four paws at a time.
