Fairhope House- 14695 Tigertail Road

The Fairhope House, built in 1955 as a one-story, four-bedroom house by Mervyn Hope, President of Hollywood Savings and Loan, was later acquired by Newt Bass as VIP lodging for the booming Apple Valley Inn. Notable guest included Bob Hop, Billy Graham, and Richard Nixon. After suffering a 1961 defeat to John F. Kennedy, one of the closest Presidential elections in U.S. History, Nixon retreated to the Fairhope House at the invitation of Bass.  While Nixon was here, he completed his first book "Six Crises" chronicling in detail his involvement in six events that marked important turning points in his life.  Nixon expressed his appreciation to Bass through a handwritten note dated October 25, 1961, that partially appears on a plaque in the front of the house:  "You were thoughtful indeed to have placed Fairhope House at my disposal, and I assure you that is seclusion and comfort helped greatly to make my efforts productive."
