The City of Victorville and the Town of Apple Valley jointly funded the construction of the Materials Recovery Facility located in Victorville in 1994. This facility receives all the commercial and residential recycling loads picked up in Victorville and Apple Valley. Once at the MRF, the materials are sorted, baled for shipment and sold to various markets. The money received from the sale of materials goes toward defraying the cost of operations.
The facility underwent an extensive upgrade and modernization in 2006, during which new, state of the art optical sorting equipment was added along with computerized controls and several new conveyor systems. These improvements increased the processing capability to approximately 20 tons of materials per hour. The MRF in operation is fascinating to watch both for children and adults. Small groups and school classes are encouraged to visit.
The co-owners of the MRF, Apple Valley and Victorville, pay the contractor who operates the MRF on a per-ton basis for all materials processed – not just on the actual recycled materials. When trash and non-recyclables are discarded in the recycle bins, it slows down processing and can damage equipment. It also raises that month’s cost to run the MRF -- which is paid by the cities and their citizens.
This is another reason that it is very important to ensure materials are sorted correctly between the recycling bin and the trash bin. If your neighbor puts trash in his blue recycle bin, he is costing YOU money – and vice versa! Not sure what to recycle?
Part of the MRF operation includes a buy-back center for people who want to take recyclables in for the cash value. Any material which is recyclable through the MRF can be taken into the buy-back center for the current market value. Contact the MRF directly at 760-241-1284 for current pricing. The MRF is located at 17000 Abbey Lane in Victorville, off Stoddard Wells Road and just west of the I-15 freeway.
