Apple Valley is governed by an elected Mayor and four Council districts.  The Mayor serves as the presiding officer at all meetings.  The Town Council also sits as the board of the Apple Valley Community Resource Foundation.

Every even-numbered year an election is held for term-ending Council district seats and the Mayor. Individuals for Council districts are elected to serve four-year terms. The Mayor serves a two-year term.

The Mayor is the Presiding Officer at all meetings of the Council and in his absence, the Mayor Pro Tem.  At the first regular meeting in December of each year the Council selects one of its number as Mayor Pro Tem.
